Questioning At-Risk Behaviours

Target audience: The Board or senior executive team, managers & supervisors

Length: Minimum ½ day

Format: Use of theatre highly recommended

Super objective: To equip managers and supervisors with the skills they need to effectively explore at-risk behaviours and improve performance.

Description: For whatever reason, people will from time to time display behaviours that might be considered ‘risky’ or ‘unsafe.’ How managers respond to these situations will define more than simply whether or not there’s a change in behaviour… get it right and we may discover things about health and safety that we can work on and improve; get it wrong and not only might we miss an opportunity to learn, but we may also do untold damage to the health and safety culture.

Content / Format:

  • Challenging or questioning? What are we trying to achieve?
  • Seeing beyond the behaviour
  • ‘Unsafe’ acts as a sign of a problem deeper within system
  • Is the policy, rule or procedure right?
  • Respecting the individual’s expertise
  • Asking the right questions
  • Seek first to understand
  • Avoiding blame
  • Consequences of a poor interaction
  • How to create a positive experience
  • Accountability for improvement; yours and theirs
