Effective Toolbox Talks

Target audience: Managers & supervisors

Length: Minimum ½ day

Format: Pure facilitation or using theatre

Super objective: To equip those who deliver them with the skills they need to effectively run valuable toolbox talks.

Description: One of the most common ways of getting your health and safety messages to the front-line is through the ubiquitous toolbox talk. The idea of these is that they are informative, engaging and thought-provoking… the reality is that they are often exactly the opposite. But this is not the fault of the individual tasked with the activity. They have often received no training in how to run these sessions properly and, as a consequence, they are often ineffective or even counter-productive.

Content / Format:

  • Identifying what makes a good toolbox talk
  • Preparing for success
  • Using props for impact
  • Using media
  • Using flipcharts and PowerPoint
  • Making material relevant
  • Presentation skills
  • Confident body language
  • Using your voice effectively
  • Storytelling
  • Involving your audience & encouraging discussion
  • Dealing with ‘difficult’ team members
