Effective Safety Conversations

Target audience: The Board or senior executive team, managers & supervisors

Length: Minimum ½ day

Format: Use of theatre recommended

Super objective: To give people the skills and insights they need to be able to engage in effective safety conversations with their employees.

Description: Safety Conversations… what are they and why should we do them? In many organisations, they have become little more than a tick-box activity, a metric by which the health of the culture is measured, a sticking plaster for problems deeper within the system. We measure their frequency, but not their quality; we record their completion, but not their effectiveness. Many people are doing them, but are they doing them well?

Content / Format:

  • What is a safety conversation for?
  • How often should they happen?
  • Why we shouldn’t waste time recording them
  • Approaching the conversation
  • Establishing trust, respect and rapport
  • Using coaching to drive improved performance
  • Educating through learning
  • Being curious
  • Recognising what is going well
  • Using positive reinforcement
  • Looking for danger in everyday success
